Choosing an Exterior Auto Lift
101 Mobility [Wilmington] offers a variety of exterior auto lifts for wheelchairs, power chairs, and mobility scooters from the industry’s leading manufacturers, including Bruno and Harmar.
There are two primary styles of exterior auto lifts – platform-style lifts, and boom-style lifts.
Platform-Style Exterior Auto Lifts
Platform-style auto lifts attach to the rear of a car, truck, minivan, or SUV via the vehicle’s tow hitch. For vehicles that do not have a hitch, our experts can install one.
The platform automatically lowers to the ground to enable easy drive-on/drive-off of your power chair, scooter, or wheelchair. Once your mobility device is in place on the platform, it is secured in place with a hold-down arm or sturdy nylon straps.
Many platform lifts are available with “swing-away” options, which enable the lift to be moved away from the vehicle 180 degrees when not in use to allow access to the automobile’s tailgate, trunk, or cargo hatch.
Boom-Style Exterior Auto Lifts
Boom-style wheelchair carriers or scooter carriers are suitable for use with most pickup trucks. The base of the lift is mounted in the bed of the truck, and the arm lowers out to attach to a wheelchair, power chair, or mobility scooter. With the press of a button, the lift transfers the mobility device into the bed of the truck, holding it securely in place.
Boom-style lifts may be installed on the driver’s side or passenger’s side of the truck, depending on the user’s needs. They place the mobility device close to the vehicle’s door, making transitions from a wheelchair to a truck easier for anyone who has difficulty maneuvering without a mobility device.
Determining Compatibility
Each auto lift has different compatibility requirements. When you speak with 101 Mobility [Wilmington]’s expert Mobility Consultants, we will need to know the make and model of your automobile as well as the make and model of your mobility device. Based on that information, we will use our compatibility checker to provide you with a list of all compatible auto lifts.
Our experts will then discuss the benefits and limitations of each compatible auto lift with you to determine the best unit for your specific needs.
